How to Clean a Leather Sofa at Home (Without Damaging It)

How to clean and condition a leather sofa at home safely: what to use, what to avoid, and how to handle stains and mould in Singapore humidity.

To clean a leather sofa: vacuum the crevices, wipe with a damp microfibre cloth and a few drops of mild soap, dry it straight away, then apply a leather conditioner. Do this every 1 to 3 months, and condition every 6 to 12 months. First, check what kind of leather you have.

Step 1: identify your leather

TypeHow to tellCare level
Pigmented / protectedEven colour, slight sheen. A water drop beads up.Easiest. Most sofas are this type.
Aniline / semi-anilineNatural grain and soft feel. A water drop darkens it.Delicate. Minimal water, and test first.
PU / faux / bondedUniform pattern, cheaper sofas, sometimes peelsWipe clean only. Don’t condition.

Step 2: clean

  1. Vacuum the seams and under the cushions with a soft brush attachment. Grit scratches leather.
  2. Mix a few drops of mild, pH-neutral soap (or a proper leather cleaner) in warm water.
  3. Wring the cloth until it’s barely damp and wipe one section at a time, top to bottom.
  4. Wipe again with a clean damp cloth to remove the soap, then dry immediately with a dry towel.
  5. Focus on headrests and armrests, where body oils and hair products build up and darken the leather.

Step 3: condition

Once the leather is dry, apply a small amount of leather conditioner with a soft cloth in circular motions. Let it absorb, then buff. Conditioning puts back the oils that cleaning and aircon remove, and helps prevent cracking. Skip this step on PU or faux leather.

Common stains

  • Ink: dab lightly with a cotton bud and a little isopropyl alcohol. Test first, and don’t rub.
  • Grease or oil: blot, then sprinkle cornflour for a few hours and brush it off.
  • Dye transfer from jeans: a leather cleaner and gentle agitation. It’s hard to fully remove at home.
  • Water marks: dampen the whole panel evenly with a barely damp cloth so it dries uniformly.

Never use these on leather

  • Vinegar, bleach, ammonia, baking soda or multi-surface sprays
  • Baby wipes (they contain alcohol and residues that dry the leather out)
  • Hairdryers or direct sun to speed up drying
  • Soaking wet cloths or steam cleaners

Mould on leather in Singapore

White or green spots after a holiday or in a closed room are mould. Wipe them with a cloth dampened in a 1:1 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water, dry the area thoroughly and condition it. Then keep the room ventilated or dehumidified. If it keeps coming back or covers large areas, see mould removal.

When to get it professionally cleaned

If the headrests have darkened, the leather feels sticky or stiff, or you’re not sure what type it is, a professional clean and condition every 12 months is the safest option. See leather sofa cleaning.
