Why velvet is different

Velvet has a dense, short pile that shows every mark. Too much water leaves rings and can crush or “bruise” the pile, and rubbing changes the direction of the fibres, so patches look lighter or darker. Many velvets also carry an S (solvent-only) cleaning code. That’s why general steam or shampoo cleaning can ruin a velvet sofa.

How we clean velvet sofas

1. Check the cleaning code (W, S, SW) and the velvet type: cotton, polyester or performance.
2. Vacuum with a soft brush in the direction of the pile.
3. Low-moisture or solvent cleaning, matched to the code, applied lightly and evenly across whole panels to avoid rings.
4. Blot and extract without rubbing.
5. Groom the pile in one direction with a soft brush so it dries even and plush.

Common velvet problems

• Water rings from spills or DIY cleaning, which can often be evened out by cleaning the whole panel
• Shiny or flattened seat areas, which improve with grooming, although wear can be permanent
• Body oil on the armrests and headrest, usually removed
• Pet hair, which clings to velvet and is removed with specialist brushes

• Vacuum weekly with a soft brush in the direction of the pile.
• Blot spills straight away. Never rub, and avoid water on S-code velvet.
• Keep it out of direct sun, because velvet fades.
• Brush the pile after use to keep it even.
