Why mould grows on furniture in Singapore

Mould needs moisture, warmth and something to feed on. Singapore’s humidity often sits around 80%, and sweat, skin cells and dust give mould plenty to feed on. It shows up most often when:

  • A home has been closed up during a trip, between tenants, or in a spare room
  • Furniture sits against a cool wall or window, or next to an aircon unit
  • A sofa or mattress was cleaned with too much water and never dried properly
  • Leather is rarely used or conditioned

How we remove mould

  1. Inspect how far it has spread, whether it’s only on the surface or has grown into the foam.
  2. HEPA vacuum to remove loose spores without spreading them around the room.
  3. Treat with a fabric-safe anti-fungal cleaner, then clean and extract.
  4. Deodorise to remove the musty smell.
  5. Dry thoroughly, which is the most important step, plus advice on stopping it coming back.

What can be saved and what can’t

  • Surface mould (white or grey fuzz, small black dots on the surface) can usually be removed completely.
  • Mould stains may lighten but leave a faint mark, especially on light fabrics.
  • Mould deep in the foam (smell from inside, spots coming through from underneath) often means replacing the cushion insert. For a mattress, replacement may be the safer choice for health reasons.

Stop mould coming back

  • Air out rooms regularly, and run a dehumidifier or the aircon’s dry mode in closed rooms.
  • Leave a small gap between furniture and walls, especially exterior walls.
  • Air mattresses by stripping the bed for a few hours, and use a breathable protector.
  • Condition leather every 6 to 12 months.
  • Get furniture professionally cleaned with extraction, which leaves it far drier than DIY wet cleaning.

Mould removal FAQ

Can mould be removed from a fabric sofa?

Surface mould can usually be removed and the spores killed. Deep growth inside the foam may need a new insert.

Is a mouldy mattress safe to keep?

If the mould is only on the surface and is treated properly, usually yes. If it has grown inside, or anyone in the home has asthma or allergies, replacing it is safer.

Can you remove mould from leather furniture?

Yes. Surface mould on leather cleans off well, and we condition the leather afterwards.

Do you remove mould from walls or ceilings?

No. We specialise in furniture and fabrics. For wall and ceiling mould, contact a specialist mould remediation company.
