How to Remove Yellow Sweat Stains from a Mattress
Why mattresses turn yellow in Singapore, a step-by-step home method for lightening sweat stains, and when they need professional treatment.
By the CleanologySG team. Updated 29 October 2026.
Short answer: blot the stain with a mild detergent solution, then (on white fabric) a little 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with baking soda, leave it to work, blot and dry thoroughly. Fresh stains lighten well; stains that are years old usually lighten rather than disappear.
Why mattresses turn yellow
Sweat contains salts, oils and proteins. In Singapore’s heat, we sweat at night even with the aircon on, and it soaks through sheets into the mattress top. As it dries and oxidises it leaves yellow patches, usually where your head, shoulders and back rest. Skin oils, hair products and spilled drinks add to it.
What you need
- Mild dish soap or laundry detergent
- Cold water and a spray bottle
- Baking soda
- 3% hydrogen peroxide (for white or light fabric only, and test first)
- Clean white cloths, and a fan
Step by step
- Vacuum the mattress to remove dust and skin flakes.
- Test any solution on a hidden spot first and check for colour change once it’s dry.
- Blot with detergent: mix a teaspoon of mild detergent in a cup of cold water, dab it on, and blot. Repeat. Don’t soak the mattress.
- Treat stubborn stains (light fabric only): mix 3 parts baking soda to 1 part hydrogen peroxide with a drop of dish soap into a paste, spread thinly, and leave 30 to 60 minutes.
- Lift the residue: scrape off the dried paste, then blot with a damp cloth.
- Dry completely with a fan or the aircon for several hours before making the bed.
Mistakes to avoid
- Hot water, which sets protein stains
- Bleach, which weakens fibres and can turn stains orange
- Soaking the mattress, which pushes moisture into the foam and risks mould
- Scrubbing hard, which spreads the stain and damages the cover
When home methods aren’t enough
Large, old or deep stains, and anything with a smell, have usually reached the comfort layers. Professional stain treatment with low-moisture extraction lifts far more and dries faster. See mattress cleaning. If the yellow patch is from urine rather than sweat, see urine stain and odour removal.
Prevent new stains
- Use a waterproof, breathable mattress protector and wash it monthly.
- Shower before bed on hot nights.
- Let hair dry before lying down.
- Get the mattress deep cleaned every 6 to 12 months.
Sweat and hair oil also stain upholstered headboards at pillow height. See headboard and bed frame cleaning.
