How to Get Rid of Dust Mites in Your Mattress (Singapore Guide)
Why Singapore mattresses are a dust mite haven, the signs you have a problem, and what actually reduces them: from weekly habits to a professional deep clean.

Short answer: you can’t make a mattress mite-free for good in Singapore’s humidity, but you can cut numbers sharply. Wash bedding hot every week, use a mite-proof cover, keep the bedroom air dry, vacuum the mattress with a HEPA vacuum, and get it deep cleaned with steam every 6 to 12 months.
Why Singapore mattresses are full of dust mites
Dust mites are microscopic and feed on the skin flakes we shed every night. They thrive at humidity above about 70% and warm temperatures, which describes most Singapore bedrooms year-round. Sweat also soaks into the top layers of the mattress and keeps it damp. It’s not about how clean your home is: almost every mattress in a humid climate hosts them.
Signs dust mites are affecting you
- Sneezing, a blocked or runny nose when you wake up
- Itchy, watery eyes in bed that improve during the day
- Eczema or asthma flaring up at night
- A mattress that’s more than a few years old and has never been deep cleaned
Weekly habits that reduce dust mites
- Wash sheets and pillowcases at 60°C every week if the fabric allows. Lower temperatures don’t kill mites reliably.
- Use a zipped, mite-proof mattress and pillow cover. It creates a barrier between you and the mattress.
- Keep bedroom humidity down with the aircon’s dry mode or a dehumidifier, and air the room daily.
- Vacuum the mattress monthly with a HEPA vacuum and an upholstery tool.
- Don’t make the bed straight away. Leave the covers pulled back for an hour so moisture escapes.
What doesn’t work as well as people think
| Method | Reality |
|---|---|
| Sunning the mattress | Helps dry it, but the heat doesn’t reach deep and most homes can’t do it properly |
| Baking soda | Good for odour, but it doesn’t kill mites |
| Fabric sprays | Mostly mask smells; little effect on mite numbers |
| UV handheld lamps | Only treat the very surface they touch |
When to get a professional deep clean
If allergy symptoms persist despite good habits, or the mattress hasn’t been cleaned in years, a professional clean with a HEPA vacuum plus high-temperature steam removes far more mites, droppings and skin flakes than home methods can. Repeat it every 6 to 12 months, or every 3 to 6 months for allergy sufferers. See mattress cleaning and our mattress cleaning price guide.
FAQ
Can you see dust mites?
No. They’re about a quarter of a millimetre long, too small to see. What you notice is the allergic reaction to their droppings.
Should I replace my mattress?
Not just because of dust mites: a deep clean plus a protective cover usually helps a lot. Replace it if it’s sagging, very old, or has mould inside.
Headboards and kids’ beds hold dust mites too. See headboard and bed frame cleaning and baby cot and kids mattress cleaning.
