Sofa Steam Cleaning vs Shampoo vs Dry Cleaning: Which Is Best?
Steam cleaning, shampooing (hot-water extraction) and dry cleaning compared for fabric sofas: what each removes, drying time, cost and which to choose.
By the CleanologySG team. Updated 26 October 2026.
For a visibly dirty fabric sofa, hot-water extraction (often called “shampooing”) is the most thorough method. Steam alone is good for sanitising and dust mites but removes little embedded dirt. Dry or low-moisture cleaning is best for delicate fabrics like velvet, or when you need the sofa dry fast.
Quick comparison
| Steam cleaning | Shampoo / hot-water extraction | Dry / low-moisture | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kills dust mites and bacteria | Yes | Yes | Partly |
| Removes embedded dirt and oils | Low | High | Medium |
| Stain removal | Low | High | Medium |
| Drying time | 1–2 hours | 4–6 hours | Under 1 hour |
| Best for | Light maintenance, allergies | Dirty sofas, stains, pets, urine | Velvet, delicate or S-code fabrics |
| Relative price | Lowest | Mid | Mid to high |
Steam cleaning
A steamer pushes hot vapour into the fabric. The heat kills dust mites and bacteria and loosens surface dust, but very little dirt is actually removed unless it’s paired with vacuuming or extraction. It’s good as a sanitising step and for regular maintenance. It disappoints on sofas with dark armrests or visible stains.
Shampooing (hot-water extraction)
This is what most professionals mean by “sofa shampoo” or “deep cleaning”. A cleaning solution is applied, worked into the fabric, then rinsed with hot water and immediately sucked back out by a powerful vacuum. The dirt leaves with the water. It’s the most effective method for body oils, food, pet accidents and general grime. Done properly, it leaves little moisture behind.
Dry and low-moisture cleaning
These methods use foam, encapsulation compounds or solvents with minimal water. They’re ideal for fabrics that shrink, bleed colour or water-mark (S and SW codes, velvet, some linens), and for sofas that must be usable within the hour. They’re less powerful than extraction on heavy soiling.
Which should you choose?
- Sofa looks fine, but you have allergies: steam plus a HEPA vacuum
- Dark armrests, stains, kids or pets: hot-water extraction
- Urine: enzyme treatment plus extraction. Steam alone can set the smell
- Velvet or a delicate fabric with an S code: low-moisture or dry cleaning
- Leather: none of these. Use a leather cleaner and conditioner
Watch out for “steam cleaning” deals
Very cheap sofa deals are often steam only. Ask the provider directly: “Do you extract the dirt, or only steam?” See sofa cleaning prices in Singapore for what each method usually costs.
